We usually think of grief as something that only pertains to a physical death, but it equally applies to the ending

of relationships, places, and situations

in our life.

When any of these unavoidable givens shows up in our life, we are faced with accepting it. In other words, we must employ the grief process with people and situations that don’t go the way we had wished. We usually think of grief as something that only pertains to a physical death, but it equally applies to the ending of relationships, places, and situations in our life. Endings are part of the human experience, but we try to skip over them. Most of us are open to new things, but not at the expense of letting go of the old. New beginnings are only possible after something else is complete.

People change out of pain or pleasure, and in most cases it’s pain. Feeling and acknowledging the pain is crucial to moving through it. It is in our distraction techniques where we typically get stuck. This is where clutter comes in. Clutter is an avoidance tactic used to distract us from dealing with painful emotions from the past. Clutter keeps us in the shallow end of the pool to avoid the deep end, and yet we end up drowning in all the stuff.
